Founded in 1961 by Pete Hutchinson near Manchester, England, Mountain Equipment was born out of a simple but visionary idea: expedition gear must be extremely warm yet ultralight.

Working from a barn, Hutchinson developed compact, packable down suits, jackets, and sleeping bags — shaped by input from legends of British climbing such as Don Whillans, Doug Scott, and Chris Bonington.

From the very beginning, the brand has been at the forefront of innovation — among the first to adopt GORE-TEX, Fleece, and Softshell — and has equipped expeditions to the highest peaks and both poles.

Today, Mountain Equipment remains a small, passion-driven company, still headquartered near Manchester. Its products continue to reflect the same founding philosophy: maximum functionality, no-frills design, and an unbroken connection to the world's finest alpinists.
